Samsung T9 Portable SSD Review: Ultimate Mobile Storage?!

The new Samsung T9 is the latest SSD to hit the market. This speedy drive promises extreme drop protection and double the speed of the T7 series. I compare the new T9 to the T7 and T7 Shield, as well as test the performance of the drive and tell you why you may not see all the benefits on your Mac.

  1. Would you recommend this to save movies/tv series? I travel a lot and I’m not sure what hard drive to buy to watch movies and shows on the go on my MacBook Air

  2. lol, I use my Seagate 7200 RPM HDD drive 2Tb for everything!! Runs cool, quiet, never fails, and doesn’t have those notorious TBW crap!! My Wife first used the same drive I’m using for 1 year, then I used it for 2 years, then she took it back for 6 months! Now, I using it again with Windows 10 and 5 or 6 games like Sunken Land, Half Life, Diablo, GTA, C&C, and more…never had any issues with performance playing anything or cache, or booting! why pay double for a less dependable SSD

  3. I have a T5 that just got corrupted and turned RAW.
Considering getting T9, but the T7 is super cheap now on Black Week, so not sure if I should go for T7 or T9.
Btw, these SSDs tend to come with exFAT out of the box. I’ve heard its recommended to reformat before use into NTFS filesystem. What do you think?

  4. Question: does the larger cache only come with the 4TB version? id like the 2TB, does this still have a larger cache or no, compared to the T7! Thanks

  5. And use a magbak wallet too hold the t9 in since it can hold a t7 just may have too squeeze the t9 in and stretch the leather

  6. When you made the note about the usbA cable, you also should have noted that not every type c port is the same neither. A user should first check what type c and gen it is before waisitng money on a drive which will never get to that speed on day your laptop

  7. Hey thanks for the video @AppleInsider ! Is it possible to connect 4 tb samsing t9 to iphone 15 pro max?? SMB Say it’s not cause it takes more power (W) than 2 tb ssd’s ? Please tell me, Cause I want to buy 4 tb ssd and must be suere

  8. Haha, just bought a T7 and didn’t even realise teh T9 excisted😂. However, I’m only using the drive casually and the tranfser speed is still sufficiet :).

  9. great info. I am wondering if there is a same difference when editing or color grading in premiere or davinci resolve. I mean direct from the disk. Will both perform the same speed? When editing or grading RAW footage you can easily go over 50 gb working direct from the drive?

  10. i got the Samsung T5 Portable SSD thinking it would work with my iPad pro. Sadly not working… only works with my PC even though formatted exFAT.

  11. MAc book pro m3 max 2024 support thunderbolt 4 which can transfer data up to 40 Gbps , I believe macbook pro M3 support thunderbolt 3 and usb 4 but macbook pro M3 pro and macbook pro M3 Max support thunderbolt 4 and usb c 4

  12. I hate how fast technology moves. Bought my t7 2 years ago for $120 and now the t9 is out and is twice as fast as my t7 for only $110 lmao. I feel scammed.

  13. Dude, SUPER HELPFUL! upgrading from my T5. Which I use as a working drive to edit photos and video. seeing you transfer 160GB in under 3 minutes is crazy!

this has sold me on the T9 over T7…time to speed up workflow! gonna get the 2TB, used to only 1TB working drive to I can store more and ready to shoot more 4k files!

Great video, was not bored, great visuals and info. Awesome work my man! Thank you 🏴‍☠

  14. Is the input watts same for 1, 2 and 4TB? What is the input watts? I guess iPhone 15 pro max is best suited for ssd since it has bigger battery. 15 plus will also do, but of no use since no 4K pro raw no body is gonna need T7.

  15. I reformatted the drive as NTFS because I’m only ever using it with windows machines and this also allows for TRIM support. Transfer speeds were also quite poor with the factory exFat partitioning. Transfers are faster with NTFS, but still a bit erratic and may still show slowdown after a while. So, why even bother with this drive unless you’re getting it cheap on sale? An nvme or standard SSD in an external enclosure is probably going to perform far better and more consistently.

  16. It comes with EXFAT and the samsung software. It gets 1000 MB per second, not 2000 MB. Is there any limitation in my macbook pro 16 M1 MAX for getting the Max speed? Im using the cable of the drive.

  17. @AppleInsider Great video, thanks for the info! I’m considering this T9 over the T7 due to the 2K read/write speeds, do the faster read/write speeds allow watching movies directly off the external ssd to be more efficient? (when plugged into a USB C 3.2 gen 2×2 port).
